At this point you’ve done the really hard work. You’ve written up ideal customer profiles and attracted those types of customers to your website or online shop. They’re buying your products, and you’re thrilled.

So, now what?

Now, you need to ensure that those customers come back again and again. The way you do this is by understanding your ideal market even better, fixing any problems they have with your products, and offering them exactly what they want.

You’re not a mind reader {and if you are, then you don’t need to read this post}. So, you need to get this information from your customers. That means you actually have to talk to them. Before you roll your eyes and tell me that you don’t have time for this or that seems too difficult, give me a minute, because I’ve got a FREE and super easy way for you to do this.

Use a free service like Survey Monkey to set up a short and simple survey that you can send to your customers one week after they purchase from you. You want to make sure they’ve received your product before you survey them, so if it’s take longer than one week for your products to arrive, send the survey once you’re sure your customer has received whatever she purchased.

Your survey must be short and simple.

If you’re anything like me, you don’t like junk clogging up your email, and you don’t enjoy filling out long winded surveys. But, I don’t mind filling out a 3 question survey for a business I really like and might buy from again.

Here’s the plan:

Once your customer has received your product, you’re going to send her a quick email that says something like,

Hi {Customer’s Name Here},

Thanks for your purchase from {your business name here}. We want to make sure that you’re experience with us rocked your world—and we want to make sure your next shopping experience is even better. If you have a few minutes, please help us make that happen by filling out a short survey here:

{link to survey}

And to thank you for filling out this survey, you’ll be entered into our monthly drawing to win a $20 gift certificate to {your business name here}.

{Your Name}

Want to know why this works?

You’re thanking the customer for her purchase before asking for anything. Then, you’re making her feel like she’s special and part of the process when you ask for her feedback. You’re also letting her know that the survey is short, and you’re giving her incentive to fill it out by entering her in a drawing to win a gift certificate.

Make sure to announce the winner of the gift certificate on your blog or website each month.

Now, let’s talk about the questions for the survey.

You want to have a place where the customer can input her name, so she can be entered to win the gift certificate. Then, you want to ask the following three questions:

1. What did you like best about your shopping experience with us?

The answers to this question will tell you what you need to do more of and what you should start highlighting in your marketing material. For instance, if every customer gushes over your packaging, you should include pictures of it on your website.

2. Is there anything we could be doing better? {Don’t worry, you won’t hurt our feelings. We really want to make things better for you.}

I like to include the part in the parentheses, because it gives your customers an extra nudge to be honest. The answers to this question will show you where you need to make improvements. Don’t let your ego get in the way. Take in the constructive criticism and make adjustments. Your creative business will be much better for it.

3. Is there something that we don’t offer that you wish we did?

You might get a lot of variety from this question, and you shouldn’t make every single thing that your customers suggest. Instead, pay attention to commonalities. For instance, if you sell art prints and 10 people tell you that they wish you’d make cards out of your prints, you might want to consider it. However, if only one person wants it, it might not be worth your time.

Surveying your customers can make a big difference.

I understand that surveying your customers means more work for you. But, I guarantee that it will pay off. Why? Because, not many small businesses take this extra step, and you’ll stand out as a business that cares about its customers. Plus, you’ll collect valuable information that will give you the tools to make your customers extra happy and to set you apart from your competitors.

Lou Lou and Oscar Why You Should Survey Your Ideal Customers and How to Do It by AprilPlushes by Lou Lou and Oscar in Flickr

{link al sondaggio}

{tuo nome}

2. C’è qualcosa che potremmo fare meglio? {Non preoccuparti, non ci ferirà. Vogliamo davvero migliorare le cose per te.}

    Survey helps business owners to distinguish whether customers are satisfied or not with the products that they had purchased. However there are some buyers that do not answer the questionnaires genuinely.

    This was just what I needed! Thanks for lighting my fire and suggesting the free site to host my survey.
