After you’ve identified your ideal market, you need to attract those people to your creative business. Once you’ve gotten them in front of your products and services, they’re going to buy—because, they’re your ideal market. So, let’s make you some money.

1. Write blog posts that appeal to your ideal market and link to your products and services.

You know that you need to be blogging, right? It’s one of the best ways to give your ideal market the opportunity to get know you, like you, and trust you. Those three things lead to sales. And, if you do it right, your blog will make your target market fall in love you and want to buy from you.

Think about your target market and write 10 blog post headlines that will appeal to them. For instance, if you sell mixed media art, your target market would probably like the following blog posts:

  • 10 Tips for Buying Original Art Online
  • An Inside Look in My Art Studio
  • Should You Buy Mixed Media Art for a Friend or Is It Too Personal?

And, here’s how you could market your products in your posts without being too pushy:

  • Link to your products when appropriate.
  • Start each post with a picture of one of your products with a link below stating that it’s available for purchase.
  • Put a little blurb at the bottom of your post in italics that tells interested readers where they can find your work.

After you’ve brainstormed 10 blog post titles, schedule one a week for the next ten weeks, and you’ve got the content for your blog for the next two and a half months.

2. Guest post on a blog that reaches your ideal market and link to your website.

If you want to build your audience fast, guest posting is your answer. Even if you don’t have your own blog, you could try guest posting to get more eyes on your products and website.

Find three blogs that your ideal market probably reads on a regular basis. For instance, if you sell knitted baby booties and hats, then you’d find your ideal market on mommy blogs—not necessarily on knitting blogs. Come up with a guest post idea that would appeal to that blog’s audience and relates to your products. For instance, you might write, “Tips for Buying Handmade Items for your Baby.”

Pitch the idea to the first blogger. If she says yes, write the best guest post you can and send it to her. Make sure to proofread and have someone else proofread it before you send it. If she says no, move to the next blogger and pitch her on your idea.

At the top or bottom of guest posts, there’s usually a small paragraph about the author. This is the place to link to your website to get those interested readers looking at your stuff.

3. Advertise online where your target market is sure to be found.

I’m not big on spending tons of money on advertising. Many times sticking a small ad on the sidebar of a blog won’t do much for you—unless, you’re smart about it.

You have to do your research and figure out exactly where your ideal market hangs out online. Then, determine your monthly advertising budget, contact the bloggers/website owners to see how much they charge for monthly advertising, and pick the spots that will give you the biggest bang for your buck.

Now, here’s the tricky part. You might think that spending your money on a blog with a lot of readers is smarter than spending your ad money on a blog with half the amount of readers. But, that’s not necessarily true. If more of your target market reads the blog with fewer readers, you’d be better off going with that one, because more of the readers will be interested in your stuff.

You also need to keep statistics on those ads. If one ad isn’t converting into views or sales, experiment with another site. Repeat this process until you find websites and blogs that work for you.

If you do these 3 things, you’ll pull in more ideal customers and that means more money in your bank account.

  • Uno Sguardo all’Interno del Mio Studio d’Arte

I’m not big on spending tons of money on advertising.

  • I’ve been really thinking about my ideal customers lately (thanks to your great articles) and I feel like I’m getting a good idea, but I still struggle with finding the blogs I think they’re reading. Hmm…a sticky wicket.

    • Hi Jenny, I think that if you’re having troubles on finding the blogs you think your readers are reading, maybe you need to better define who your ideal customers/readers are.
I would suggest to spend some time on this and maybe, even before of this, have you already tried to focus on what are the contents that you want your site has?
